System Control and Instrumentation Engineer

Full Time Permanent Position

Opportunity Summary:

The System Control and Instrumentation Engineer will work in a start-up company that is developing modular systems to make carbon-free fuel from clean energy. That fuel is NH3 (ammonia), which is a higher energy density, more easily stored and transported way of using hydrogen. The aspects of the fuel synthesis process have been validated and the current focus is on system integration. The small scale, modular nature of the end product requires creative approaches to low cost, high reliability sensing and process control. The System Control and Instrumentation Engineer will work with the development team to design and develop a control system using a broad range of sensing hardware supervised by a GNU/Linux platform. Instrumentation and controls will be integrated for several pieces of equipment including an electrolyzer, nitrogen generator, and a newly developed ammonia reactor. The ideal candidate will have demonstrated skill in computer programming, data acquisition, advanced process control (APC), distributed control systems (DCS), programmable logic controllers (PLC), and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA).

Essential Job Duties:

Design, develop, implement, and document a data acquisition and control system for a fully automated fuel synthesis system.

  • Develop functional requirement specifications

  • Incorporate safety measures into all areas of system operation

  • Program PLCs

  • Collaborate on sensor, controls, and other hardware elements of the system

  • Document system commissioning, operating, and shutdown procedures

  • Contribute expertise and knowledge toward system modularization and process intensification

  • Provide technical expertise for analysis and troubleshooting of equipment


  • Experience in integration of automation systems (SCADA, PLC, Sensors, etc…)

  • Experience with programming languages such as Python, C, C++, and PLC languages

  • Familiarity with Modbus and similar communication protocols

  • Demonstrated problem solving and troubleshooting skills

  • CAD Skills with willingness to adapt them to BricsCAD

  • Office software skills (document, spreadsheet, and presentation)

  • Willingness to work in an Ubuntu GNU/Linux computing environment

  • Must be eligible to work in the US, no H1B nor student visa available for this position

Additional skills/experience that are beneficial, but not required:

  • Experience in a chemical processing environment

  • Laboratory and/or Shop skills

  • Excellent critical thinking skills

  • Strong teamwork skills

  • Ability to self-direct and drive to aggressive milestones

  • High attention to detail
